Does anybody have experience with the "truss rod rescue kit" that Stewmac sells? I am going to help a friend fix a D-28 truss rod that has stripped threads. The instructions show a Gibson style rod being fixed, I guess you'd have to take the neck off to access the truss rod on the Martin, unless you could reach it through the endpin hole or something...?

So, anyone have experience with this tool? I will also e-mail Stewmac about this.

I believe it is a new product for them but the concept is pretty straight forward. You are probably right about having to remove the neck to fix a through the sound hole adjusting nut. If going to the trouble of removing the neck on a Martin I would remove the fretboard and replace the rod.

I've ground down plug cutters to expose more threads in the past, but the
addition of the tap in the StewMac kit is certainly a nice feature.
Unfortunately I doubt it would work very well on a Martin neck even if it's off
the instrument, as the aluminum U-channel that they use would be a real
pain.

I would either pull the board and replace the rod, or treat it like any other
old Martin with a non adjustable rod. Compression fretting, heat treating,
etc., are very reasonable options depending on the customers budget.
